EDGAR KENNEDY

Other notable films: Tillie's Punctured Romance (1914); Duck Soup (1933); Twentieth Century (1934); Kid Millions (1934); San Francisco (1936); A Star is Born (1937); Anchors Aweigh (1945); also several shorts with Sennett and Chaplin (1914 - 1918), star of his own series of shorts from 1931 to 1948, and several directing credits.

Kennedy began his career as a vaudevillian at age 20 and moved to films at age 24. He supported Chaplin on many an occasion and stayed with Mack Sennett for years. He began directing films in the mid-20's and later directed Laurel and Hardy in From Soup to Nuts and You're Darn Tootin'. His career took off once he signed with Hal Roach in 1928 where he developed his trademarked blustery/befuddled character with the slow burn. Beginning in 1931 and continuing up to his death from throat cancer in 1948, he starred in "The Edgar Kennedy Series" as a hapless, henpecked Everyman, unable to cope with the complexities of modern life. His best-remembered screen appearances came with Hollywood's two greatest comedy teams: with Laurel and Hardy in A Perfect Day and The Marx Brothers in DUCK SOUP.
